Lim x SolarAid: A Night Without Light

Supporting communities without electricity

We’re proudly partnered with SolarAid, the charity that provides solar lights to communities without electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.

As part of our partnership, we organised A Night Without Light, and the whole Lim team took part.

It meant turning the lights off for the whole evening/night and living either by candlelight or solar light to experience what it’s like for the communities in Africa living without electricity. For millions of people, when the sun goes down their day ends. Their only option is to use dirty and dangerous fuels like kerosene lamps, paraffin candles, and straw fire which are toxic to people and the planet.

Here's what we learnt

  • We take electricity for granted. From everything to cooking, going to the bathroom and how we spend dark winter evenings.
  • We need to plan it. The overwhelming feeling from the team was that it was harder than we thought without some forward planning.
  • How lucky we are that we don't think twice about turning the lights on, cooking our food, and spending time with our families. Electricity is part of our lives so much that we barely notice what it's used for until it's not there.

It was an eye opening experience as to how millions of people live without electricity. We're proud to be supporting such an important cause.

All donations made supported SolarAid to provide more people in sub-Saharan Africa with small, clean, renewable solar lights so children can continue to study after dark, midwives can deliver babies at night and farmers can continue working after the sun goes down.
