Elly Charity at Whitechapel Gallery
Elly Charity held its first event at Whitechapel Gallery in London to celebrate the success of Women’s Health Literacy Project, a course developed to educate women with little to no English about their pregnancies.
Spotlight on the night
We heard from important voices from the project; Founders, Drs, Charity Trustees, course teachers and women who were on the courses. It was inspiring to hear how the course empowered and created a sense of community for these women. Some of them had even had their babies - and the babies were at the event too.

Creating visuals for universal understanding
The project was co-created by the charity with community researchers, health professionals, ESOL teachers, students and non-English speaking pregnant women. All visuals were created by Lim and were essential to the success of the project to elevate understanding for the women on the courses.
Ellie P created illustrations that were universally relatable for all women, including those from different cultural backgrounds and religions. The same illustrations were repeated throughout the course to create a feeling of continuity, which demonstrated the importance of building emotional connections through visuals.
Showcasing our partnership
Lim has worked with Elly Charity for over two years, and the visuals created throughout our partnership were displayed in the gallery as part of the exhibition. Ellie put up interactive boards with pens for people at the event to write about what inspired them, and Ellie P developed a special 3-metre visual for the exhibition that documented the weekly course content.
It was a joy to be in the room to celebrate the brilliant work.
